My Birthday Gift, to you!

I just had a birthday. Two things happened. I got a tattoo, and I recorded a song. I did both in the company of good friends.
The song is my take on a Leonard Cohen song, “Bird On A Wire”. Not coincidentally, so is the tattoo.

I want to share both with you, but not before I say how grateful I am for this life, and to all of you (if you’re reading this, I’m referring to you) for the endless support and kindness. Each year I’m reminded how many good people inhabit this planet, and particularly how many I’m lucky to know.

With that said, it’s an uphill battle, for each of us. Every day presents new challenges. Challenges to our spirit, our faith (whatever that may be), and to our will. It is a great virtue to be able to continually get knocked down, only to rise again to push that boulder up the hill. It’s an even greater virtue then, to stay true, and free, in the face of this hardship. Yet, we hear stories every day of just that: The resilient human spirit.

This inspires me. I hope it does you, as well.

Now, without further ado, it’s time to share my birthday gifts to myself, with you!

First, have a look-see at my brand new piece…

I have tried, in my way, to be free.t

For Mom, Everyday. (Springsteen to Stewart)

I didn’t send my Mom a card for Mother’s Day this year.

Instead, I recorded this song for her. It’s a Springsteen song called “Jesus Was An Only Son”. Before you get nervous, it’s not a religious song.
It’s a story about the Mother archetype, to borrow terminology from another hero, Carl Jung.

Springsteen to Stewart

I found it fitting because it tells of the lasting, binding love between a mother and child. But it also speaks of ALL Love. The Big Picture kind of Love.
The kind that you share with a friend, a parent, a spiritual deity, or maybe with your own Soul. It’s the Love that walks beside you as you struggle, and carries you when you’ve fallen and feel as though you cannot go on.

The line that brings it all home, for me, is the last one. Gives me chills singing it. You can probably hear it in my voice.

So. I wanted to give it to my Mother first.
Now I want to share it with you. It’s a free download. Yours forever.

All I ask in return is that you SHARE or TWEET this player so others can find me.

My take on Nick Drake

I’ve been a long time fan of Nick Drake. Like most, I was introduced to his music via the Volkswagon commercials from some years back. What you may not have known is that his popularity came decades after his early death. He once said outside the recording studio he was working at, “If I’m so good, why am I so broke?”. This is a sad truth that many artists face.

He hailed from the age of the Major Labels, when an artist’s fate was determined at the hands of the bean-counters at the top of the music business pyramid.

Luckily for me, and for you, things have changed.
Back then, I wouldn’t have the ability to do what I’m about to do, RIGHT HERE, on this page, WHICH IS….

SHARING a BRAND NEW SONG!!!

My trusty partner, Chris Tench, and I recorded one of my favorite Nick Drake songs called “Free Ride”.

I want you to have it.

All I ask in return is that you SHARE or TWEET this player so others can find me.

This is how the new music world operates. You guys are the Label. Mr. Drake would be proud.

Brett covers Elliott Smith in a Memphis hotel.

While waiting for showtime, Brett had this Elliott Smith song running on repeat through his head, so he sat down to exorcise it. Robyn Davis from Indie Squared Entertainment was there and filmed it.

Music Featured on “So You Think You Can Dance” on Fox TV

Recently I’d learned, through a friend on FaceBook, that my song “Needle & Spoon” was featured on last weeks episode of So You Think You Can Dance on Fox TV ( Season 8, Episode 10, airdate 6/29/ 2011 ). This was the Top 16 Show, and the song (sans lead vocal track) ran for 90 seconds over the rehearsal scene with dancers Ryan Ramirez and Ricky Jaime, aka Ryan & Ricky.

This beautiful dance was choreographed by Sonya Tayeh , who fans of SYTYCD will contest is THE best on the show. If you watch this piece unfold I think you’ll see why.  I was touched by how closely her description of the emotion behind the dance fit the context of my song… love and loss. I’d never previously heard “With Every Heartbeat” by Robyn, but the transition from “Needle & Spoon” gave the entire scene a certain grace, in my opinion.

Have a look: (song starts at :42 mark)

Now have a listen to the full version, with vocal track:

Big Stage. Big Lights. Big Sound. Great Cause.

This Friday, June 18th, at 9pm, is a FIRST.

A FIRST for what you ask?

The FIRST time Brett will be playing most of his new record Live.

And… it’s a good cause that Brett holds dear to his heart, the Relay For Life, a Cancer Benefit.

This is a pretty big deal. It’s an enormous event. So enormous they had to hold it at LP Field,

the stadium where The Tennessee Titans play football.

If you’re local we think you should come. Yes. Yes we do.

Here’s  a shot of our rehearsal for our big debut! (more on photos page!)

See You Friday :-)
